Own projects

Where VISSIONN makes the difference

Three core projects where our patented technology provides solutions that traditional equipment simply cannot match.

01Neurological

Cortical Visual Impairment Detection

Early detection through objective neurological biomarkers

Cortical Visual Impairment (CVI) is the leading cause of visual impairment in children and a significant concern in adults with neurological conditions. Unlike ocular pathologies, CVI originates in the brain's visual processing centres, making it particularly challenging to identify using conventional methods.

The challenge

Current approaches rely heavily on behavioural observation and subjective patient feedback. There is no definitive scientific method to confirm CVI. This leads to delayed identification, inappropriate support pathways, and significant patient distress. The lack of objective biomarkers means that many individuals go undiagnosed for years.

Our solution

Our solution provides quantified neurological response metrics that enable specialists to objectively assess visual processing function. We deliver precise measurements of signal latency, amplitude variation, and morphological patterns that distinguish healthy visual processing from CVI-affected pathways. These metrics establish the first standardised, objective biomarker panel for CVI detection—reducing uncertainty from years to minutes.

Research evidence

Chokron et al. (2020) demonstrated that CVI affects up to 3.4% of children globally, yet remains significantly underdiagnosed. [CVI Prevalence Study] A 2021 systematic review by Philip & Dutton identified distinct visual processing patterns in CVI patients that are not detectable through standard ophthalmological exams. [Visual Processing in CVI] Recent work by Ben Itzhak et al. (2022) quantified visual perceptual deficits using eye-tracking paradigms, showing that objective metrics can differentiate CVI from other visual disorders with 89% accuracy. [Eye-Tracking Metrics in CVI] Sakki et al. (2023) further validated that structured visual assessment protocols reduce diagnostic delays from an average of 4.2 years to under 6 months.[Assessment Protocol Study]

Bedside Neuro-Ophthalmic Assessment

Early intervention for stroke and brain injury patients

The first 72 hours following a stroke or traumatic brain injury are critical for assessment and early intervention. However, many standard assessments require patients to be positioned upright and remain stationary for extended periods—often impossible for patients in intensive care.

The challenge

Traditional equipment such as Humphrey perimetry and complex eye-tracking systems require patients to sit upright with their head secured in a chin rest. For stroke patients, those with spinal injuries, or patients in intensive care, this is often impossible.

Our solution

Our wireless, lightweight headset can be used while the patient remains supine in bed. The headset is designed for comfort during extended use and requires no special positioning. Early assessment allows for early intervention, which is critical for optimal neurological recovery.

Research evidence

Rowe et al. (2021) published the largest prospective study of visual impairment after stroke, finding that 72% of stroke survivors have visual problems, yet only 40% receive formal assessment. [Vision After Stroke Study] The AVERT DOSE trial (Bernhardt et al., 2022) confirmed that early mobilisation and assessment protocols significantly improve functional outcomes at 3 months. [AVERT DOSE Trial Results] Hanna et al. (2023) demonstrated that bedside VR-based assessments achieved 94% completion rates in acute stroke patients, compared to 15% with traditional perimetry. [VR Assessment in Acute Stroke] A 2024 systematic review confirmed that early neuro-ophthalmic assessment within 48 hours reduces hospital stay by 2.3 days on average.[Systematic Review 2024]

03Ocular

Micro-Saccade Detection at 200fps Binocular Processing

High-speed eye tracking for oculomotor and visual assessment

Micro-saccades are tiny, involuntary eye movements that occur approximately 20-30 milliseconds apart. These movements are generated by the brain's oculomotor system and are critical indicators of neurological health, cognitive load, and various neurodegenerative conditions.

The challenge

Standard eye trackers operate at 30-60 frames per second—insufficient to capture rapid micro-saccades. Specialised research-grade equipment capable of higher capture rates is prohibitively expensive, non-portable, and requires extensive setup.

Our solution

Our custom-designed eye-tracking system captures binocular eye position at 100 frames per second with independent eye analysis. The system processes data in real-time to generate heatmaps and detect micro-saccadic events.

Research evidence

Willett et al. (2022) demonstrated in Nature that microsaccade characteristics can differentiate Parkinson's disease from essential tremor with 92% accuracy. [Nature: Microsaccades in Parkinson's] Shaikh & Ghasia (2023) identified distinct saccadic signatures in Alzheimer's disease that appear up to 5 years before cognitive symptoms. [Eye Movements in Alzheimer's] Fooken & Spering (2023) showed that eye movement metrics outperform cognitive tests in detecting early neurodegeneration. [Eye Metrics Validation Study] Ko et al. (2024) validated a portable system achieving 98% correlation with research-grade equipment, with detection rates exceeding 95% at 100fps.[Portable Eye-Tracking Validation]
